Heading Back to School - Your Oils Arsenal

Back to School Are you ready for back to school? If you're a parent with a school aged child this is a question you hear constantly this time of year. My answer is always no!

Let me clarify, from a tangible, physical standpoint we are ready - we have our clothes, our backpacks are packed, and we have our much needed school supplies but it seems, in our house, we are never emotionally ready.

In our house the start of the school year is filled with emotions. Depending on which one of my four children you speak with you'll get a different emotion associated with school. The range is wide and includes nervousness, anger, excitement, anticipation, and confidence. Add to that my own anxiety and anticipation for what the school year will bring and what you have is a house filled with emotions running on high.

To me there's no better time to ensure that my back to school arsenal is well stocked with essential oils and nutritional supplements to help make a smoother transition from summer to school. It gives me some peace of mind to know I can help alleviate some of our anxieties with proper nutrition and with the help of 100% pure essential oils. Following is what I have in our back to school arsenal to help us start the school year off right.

Good nutrition is key for a happy mind and body and is vital to build a healthy immune system. To help bolster my kids' emotional and physical health I supplement their diets with:

  • Kids MightyVites - A nutrient-dense whole food source multi-vitamin which contain super fruits, plants and veggies that deliver the full-spectrum of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytonutrients for children's developing bodies.

  • Omega Blue - clinically proven dose of omega-3 (EPA, DHA) fatty acid nutrients. Fish oils and omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to help children who cannot focus while at school. We've had great results using Omega-3 fatty acids. These work great for my older guy as he can swallow pills but for my younger ones I use Coromega Omega-3 Supplement

  • NingXia Red Singles - I drop one of these single packs in the kids lunch boxes to give them a good boost of vitamins and minerals in the middle of their day. Its an excellent way to ensure they are getting their needed vitamins throughout their day.

  • Manna Bars - a multi grain snack bar made with nutrient-rich whole foods. The bars are a healthy snack alternative to other sugary non-nutritious snacks and give good steady energy to busy minds and bodies.

Aromatherapy, through the use of Essential Oils, is a great way to help your child through times of nervousness, anxiety, to help clear their minds, and to help them with studying. Using a cold air diffuser at home and having them wear a Terra-cotta pendant or bracelet at school is an excellent way to provide the needed aromatherapy. Read Aromatherapy for Students to learn more about using essential oils for improving concentration, increasing memory, improving study skills, and helping your student think clearly. Here is a list of the oils we'll be using throughout the school year:

  • Lemon - When diffused, lemon has been known to refresh and stimulate the mind, improve memory, and promote a sense of well-being. Its scent is revitalizing and uplifting. My middle guy will have this on his Terra-Cotta Pendant, especially on his first day of first grade. This is his favorite oil and I am sure it will bring him comfort while away from home. We will also be diffusing lemon while doing homework.

  • Peppermint - Dr. William N. Dember of the University of Cincinnati studied peppermint's ability to improve concentration and mental sharpness. We'll diffuse this oil during homework if we are having trouble concentrating.

  • Clarity - After researching this blend for a friend I had to add it to our arsenal. I am putting this essential oil blend in a roll on for my oldest son to discretely apply to his wrists when he feels he needs focus. After reading about the benefits of Clarity I am hopeful that it will help.

  • Jasmine - My daughter Cait will wear this on her Terra-Cotta Pendant. Jasmine relaxes, soothes, uplifts, and enhances self-confidence. This is her oil of choice and in my opinion, it couldn't be a better oil for her to take to school.

  • Peace and Calming Essential Oil Blend - This is a must have! When diffused, it helps calm tensions and uplift the spirit, promoting relaxation and a deep sense of peace. When massaged on the bottoms of the feet, it can be a wonderful prelude to a peaceful night's rest. Peace & Calming may be especially calming and comforting to young children after an overactive and stressful day.

  • Thieves Essential Oil Blend - My children won't leave for the day without a loving foot rub with Thieves Essential Oil Blend. This is a fun ritual we perform every morning. Its a great time to give your child that extra love they need to start the day happy. You'll also be giving their bodies help in fighting off all those nasty germs that they encounter throughout their day.

And while I am providing my children with good nutrition and helping them by using essential oils it is ever important to make sure I am protecting them from all the germs that are abundant in their classrooms. So, in addition to their morning foot rubs, each of my children's backpacks contains their own Thieves Hand Purifier for use throughout their day. I love this hand purifier because it doesn't contain the antibacterial triclosan nor the dreaded isopropyl alcohol that poses problems when children ingest it. I love this purifier because the Thieves essential oil blend remains on the skin to continually purify long after application.

What's in your back to school arsenal?

Check out this Fun Interactive Foot Chart!

Earlier this week I posted about my children requesting that I rub oils on their feet (read the post here). We rub oils on our feet almost daily and in the winter it becomes part of our morning routine using Thieves Oil Blend to avoid any unwanted germs we may encounter during the day.

Rubbing oils on the feet dates back to biblical times when anointing the feet was common practice. It is a very pleasurable experience indeed but did you know that it can also be a very healing experience too?

According to researcher Jean Valnet,M.D., an essential oil that is directly applied to the skin can pass into the bloodstream and diffuse throughout the tissues in 20 minutes or less (all the more reason why you want to use essential oils that are 100% therapeutic grade.) If you are doubtful about the power of diffusion through the whole body, try rubbing a clove of garlic on the soles of your feet, or put it between your toes, and see how long it takes until you taste it!

For thousands of years Chinese healers have used acupuncture and acupressure on the bottoms of their clients' feet to achieve healthy changes throughout the whole body. These ancient sciences have been adopted by Western medicine and are even taught in several medical schools in the U.S. We know this practice as reflexology.

At this point it would be appropriate to show you a reflexology chart for the feet but I thought you might enjoy an interactive chart instead. This is a fun chart to help you learn about the reflexes in the feet that correspond to all the body organs and systems. To view this chart click here.

When something ails you use the interactive chart to figure out what part of your foot to massage then use Young Living's Vita Flex Chart to figure out what Young Living Essential Oils would be best to help you balance your system.

Oh, and don't forget to get someone else to rub the oils onto your feet; it helps speed up the healing process! At least that is what I tell my family

Are You Frustrated with Critters Eating Your Plants?

I was too until I made this deer repellent with essential oils. The original recipe, without the added essential oils, is from Missouri Botanical Gardens. The source for the recipe said it has been used effectively for over 100 years to repel deer.

To this recipe, I added Thieves Essential Oil Blend because it contains both Clove Essential Oil and Cinnamon Essential Oil both which are known to repel animals. I then added Cayenne pepper because it is known to keep the chewers away; apparently they don't like the taste, who could blame them.

The end result is a natural repellent that actually works. I have found that it repels all of the critters that were eating my plants. Even the cute little groundhog family of 3 who reside in my backyard.

I have literally watched them sniff my plants and run.

Homemade Deer Repellent with Eggs

2 Eggs
1 cup of Water
1 cup of Skim Milk
1 squirt of liquid dish soap (helps make concoction sticky)
20 drops Clove Essential Oil , Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil or Thieves Essential Oil Blend
2 tsp Cayenne Pepper

In a Blender, mix two eggs to one cup of water. Blend well then add one cup of skim milk, dish soap, essential oil, and cayenne pepper. Put this mixture into a Spray Bottle and spray a light mist over the plant. For larger areas use a Lawn and Garden Sprayer. Straining the mixture prior to pouring it into the spray bottle or garden Sprayer is a good idea so your nozzel doesn't get clogged from the egg.

There will be very little odor but deer and other critters will not find it appetizing. Remember to re-apply after heavy rains.

I have used this mixture straight and I have diluted it by putting the mixture into a gallon jug and adding water to fill the jug. The dilution doesn't hurt its effectivness but be warned don't leave the unused portion sitting in your garage for any length of time - Rotten Eggs - Not a good smell

Want to know how you can get these oils at wholesale pricing? Maybe you need help ordering? Contact me, I am ready to help.

Have You Oiled Your Hot Tub Lately?

Rich and Shauna Dastrup wrote:

We were introduced to Young Living Essential Oils almost 8 years ago. At that time "ignorance" prevailed in our lives when it came to health, doctors, prescriptions, chemicals, and HOT TUBS. We, like most people, used the things we were told we were supposed to use in all areas of our lives.

Then something happened.

The grandparents of our daughter-in-law gave us a Young Living Missing Link cassette tape [now available in CD], which has had a profound effect on our lives. As we learned, used, and experimented we found we had a "killer" living with us called a HOT TUB!

We treated the water with lots of chemicals, which were contributing to our already poor physical health. What to do?

We talked with Gary Young about 6 years ago and what he had to say about chemicals scared the heck out of us and we quit using our HOT TUB! But then we decided to experiment with the essential oils in our hot tub. This is what we learned...

Our tub holds 300 gallons of water. In it, we used the "prescribed" chemicals and had it "balanced" so it was "safe" to use. Then we added 12 drops Young Living Geranium essential oil and circulated the water for 30 minutes.

We re-tested an hour later. Guess what? The bromine and chlorine indicator on the test strip was white, telling us they had disappeared. But the pH was holding just fine (wonder what happened to the bromine and chlorine?) and every indication was that the water was clean and balanced. We would guess that the bromine and chlorine were neutralized or "digested" by the Geranium oil. We have done this over and over and it keeps on doing the same thing.

Almost 4 years ago we started traveling in our motor home to teach and hold workshops with our Young Living distributors and we decided to experiment a little more with our HOT TUB during the time it was not being used to see if the desirable water conditions would hold without adding chemicals or more oils.

Each time we left we would add about 12 drops of Geranium oil, run it a few minutes, and turn the heat down - not off - down. Each time we returned (the longest absence being 6 months) we wondered what kind of scum we would come home and find. Each time we came home, including after the 6 month trip, the water was crystal clear. WOW!

Order Geranium Essential Oil here............

Prior to our experimenting, we maintained the tub using the standard chemicals recommended by the hot tub dealer. If the tub were not maintained on a regular basis we came back to a real mess.

Now when we are ready to change the water we clean the tub and fill it with water. We clean the 3 big filters and soak them in a mixture of about 15 drops Thieves oil in enough water to immerse the filters for about 3 hours. Then we put the filters back in and added 12 drops Geranium oil to the water. It is so relaxing and refreshing to soak in our clean, fresh, balanced, and safe HOT TUB.

For an extra treat, while we soak we like to toss in an Aqua Essence Bath Pack [no longer available so just add several drops of a favorite essential oil for scent]. Now this is the way to enjoy a REAL HOT TUB!

It is wonderful to get out of the tub smelling of essential oils instead of chlorine and knowing full well we are helping our bodies maintain health rather than compromising them.

We share this to encourage people to experiment and use Young Living Essential oils to protect themselves and remove as many chemicals as possible from their lives.

If you have any questions regarding any of the products mentioned or need help placing an order, let me know. I'd be happy to help you get the products so you can get the chemicals out of your life!!

Mosquitoes Bugging You?

It's that time of year when the mosquitoes come calling. For my family it means we have to be ready to fight one of our biggest outdoor challenges so we can enjoy some outdoor fun.

We live in a highly wooded yard and the mosquitoes can get so bad my children will actually fore go outdoor activities rather than be bitten by these loathsome critters. I can't very well blame them especially when I see the welts these pests leave on their delicate skin. More worrisome then the welts are the chance of contracting West Nile virus or the other diseases that mosquitoes carry. Yet we have to get outside!

Aggressive action is needed at our house to win the battle of Us vs. The Mosquitoes; and that is exactly what we do! We use a variety of methods to manage the mosquitoes. We use a propane powered Mosquito Trap, we hang pheromone Mosquito Traps, we use candles with drops of essential oils in them when we dine outside and we have my children's favorite mosquito warfare tactic - shooting them down with water guns. But the one action I won't take is spraying bug spray that contains DEET on my children.

Yes, DEET is the most powerful insect repellent made but I can't bring myself to apply this chemical onto my children and here's why. DEET is known to cause neurological damage, and once it enters the bloodstream, it makes its way to the nervous system, where it is known to cause seizures and even deaths.

DEET can be especially harmful to children, which is why The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than one application of DEET per day for children. Okay, great, so one application a day won't cause any damage? But what happens over time when my children's bodies have absorbed years of DEET use? No Thanks, I don't want to know! I'll stick to my homemade bug sprays made with essential oils!!

Essential oils work wonderfully to repel mosquitoes without any neurological damage ;-) and when you use Soybean oil as the base for the lotion you will have a very effective mosquito repellent. An efficacy test at the University of Florida on various types of repellents indicated that a soybean oil-based repellent is as effective as repellents with low concentrations of DEET and when USDA researchers tested the success of a soybean oil repellent, they found that it provided protection from bites between 5 and 8 hours, depending on the species of mosquito they studied.

Essential Oils to Use for Natural Mosquito Repellent:

Single Oils - Peppermint, Eucalyptus Radiata, Lemon, Lime, Lavender, Tea Tree, Cedarwood, Geranium, Idaho Tansy, Rosemary, Patchouli, Citronella, Lemongrass, Thyme

Young Living Blends - Purification, Thieves, Melrose

The following Blend is found in the Essential Oils Desk Reference (3rd Edition)

Insect Repellent Blend
6 drops Peppermint
6 drops Tea Tree
9 drops Eucalyptus Radiata

How To Use Essential Oils as Mosquito Repellent:

  1. Make a lotion using 10 drops of essential oil to 2 Tablespoons Soybean Oil.

  2. Make a spray by mixing the essential oils with water in a spray bottle. Shake the mix before using and take care not to spray the eyes.

  3. Having a party? Cut some festive fabric into strips and dip into the insect repellent blend or one of the insect-repelling essential oils mixed with water and hang or tie to trees around your yard to make a natural barrier for the mosquitoes.

  4. Add a few drops of your choice of insect-repelling essential oils to your shampoo, conditioner, or liquid soap to help counteract the perfumes in these products that attract the mosquitoes.

  5. Wear a Terra-Cotta Pendant Simply put a few drops of the insect-repelling essential oils onto the pendant and wear it around your neck. These pendants will diffuse the oils in your space and keep the mosquitoes away.

  6. Add a few drops of Cinnamon Oil to standing water such as bird baths and rain barrels. According to a study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, Cinnamon Oil has been found to be more effective in killing mosquito larvae than DEET.

Please take caution and don't spray or apply any insect repellents over cuts, scratches, rashes, or other open spots in the skin. And note that while these repellents do work, they are certainly not as effective as DEET. You will need to reapply these homemade insect-repellents more often than you do commercial brands but I think you will find the benefits of not absorbing the toxic chemicals far outweighs the reapplication.

Let me know if you try these solutions and how they work for you.

Please contact me if you have any questions or need help ordering any of the oils.

Clean Your Air Naturally Without Harmful Chemicals

Did you know that when the Natural Resources Defense Council conducted tests on popular air fresheners they found that 12 out of 14 contained the harmful chemical Phthalates (pronounced tha-lates)? Read the report here and see a list of the worst offenders.

Phthalates is a hazardous chemical that has been found to cause reproductive problems, birth defects and hormonal abnormalties in humans. In addition, exposure to Phthalates in indoor enviornments has also been associated with allergy symptoms and asthma.

Air fresheners release Phthalates into the air where they are inhaled and/or land on the skin and are absorbed. Phthalates are then absorbed into the bloodstream and that is when the problems begin.

Clearly, air fresheners are not a good solution for freshening or even cleaning the air, as some air freshener companies’ claim. A safe alternative and one of the best ways to purify and scent the air in your home or office is to use a cold air diffuser with essential oils.

A cold air diffuser consists of an air pump (like the pump for a fish tank) that blows room temp air through a tube and into a hand blown glass nebulizer. This action puts micro-fine particles of the essential oil into the air. The anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and antiseptic properties of the essential oils, along with the negative ions and oxygenating molecules that are released when essential oils are diffused, remain suspended in the air to help reduce chemicals, bacteria, and metallics in the air. All added bonuses to scenting the air!

What oils should you diffuse? Most single oils are great for diffusing and Young Living offers some blends especially designed for diffusing. Here are some suggestions:

Peace and Calming is a wonderful blend to diffuse to create a calm environment. This blend is great for calming overactive children.

Purification is specifically designed to purify the air. This blend works great to rid your home or office of odors and air borne bacteria. Diffuse this blend after cooking a seafood meal and you'd never know you had fish for dinner!

Thieves Blend was tested by Weber State University and was shown to kill 100% of the airborne bacteria present when diffused into the air. This is a great blend to diffuse in times of illness or to ward off airborne bacteria to prevent illness.

Citrus Fresh is a beautiful citrus scent that makes your enviornment smell clean and fresh and works as a great air purifier.

Keep your indoor air quality free of Phthalates and at its best by avoiding commercial air fresheners, invest in a cold air diffuser.

*Ask me how you can get 50% off a Young Living cold air nebulizing diffuser.*

If you have questions or need assistance in placing an order contact me, I will be happy to help you.
